Enhancing Email Security Pilot Project

Traditional email security response often relies on manual, complex rule sets that can miss sophisticated scams. We need to take a different approach. Our pilot program uses AI-assisted software called Sublime to analyze an email's context, intent, and visual elements to help catch malicious content before it can do any harm.

Core Benefits

  • No More Guesswork for You: You no longer need to spend time second-guessing suspicious messages in your inbox. The software automatically analyzes links, logos, and email context to flag or quarantine dangerous messages, giving you a heads-up before you accidentally click a bad email.
  • Faster Response & Feedback: When you or a colleague report a suspicious email, the automated platform analyzes it in seconds. Reported messages are routed into a pipeline (with human oversight) for analysis. The reporting user receives timely feedback.
  • A Safer Campus Network: Security is a community effort. As more people sign up, Sublime gets a clearer picture of the specific phishing trends targeting UC Berkeley. This helps protect everyone by enabling faster detection of campus-wide attack campaigns.

Privacy First

Privacy is a key focus of our rollout. We have established strict safeguards to ensure your communications remain private:

  • Least Perusal Principle: Automated systems perform the initial scanning. Security staff review email content only if a message is flagged as dangerous. This actually reduces overall human viewing of emails compared to our traditional manual investigation process.
  • Data is kept within Berkeley Systems: Email analysis stays local to our environment and is not sent off to centralized third-party servers.
  • No AI Model Training on Your Data: Campus email content is strictly prohibited from being used to train third-party or external large language models (LLMs).
  • Complete Transparency & Oversight: Every decision Sublime makes provides explicit, plain-language reasoning that campus security teams can audit.

Implementation Plan

To ensure both safety and top-notch performance, our platform will launch a pilot with rigorous approval checkpoints. Stay tuned for updates as we strive to deliver the best experience possible.
