UC’s Privacy Values
UC Berkeley recognizes privacy as a fundamental value of the University, key to human dignity and the academic and intellectual freedoms that further the University mission. The Electronic Communications Policy (ECP) is UC’s governing policy for privacy and establishes parameters for allowable monitoring of electronic communications by IT Service Providers.
Routine Monitoring
The Information Security Office (ISO) engages in routine monitoring of campus networks and devices in order to ensure their reliability and security. This monitoring is allowed under campus policy and the UC ECP because it meets specific conditions defined in those policies.
In particular:
- ISO’s routine monitoring practices have been reviewed and approved by the campus Information Risk Governance Committee;
- ISO performs routine monitoring only for the purpose of ensuring the reliability and security of campus systems and IT services;
- ISO’s routine monitoring activities are limited to the least perusal and subject to the shortest retention period required and authorized to ensure the reliability and security of systems;
- ISO publishes and maintains notice of its routine monitoring practices and any deviations (CalNet login required).
