Our office has received a number of reports recently of bogus offers for free or discounted convert tickets offered in UCB student platforms (discord, chatgroups, etc.).
What makes these phishing?
When contacted the individual may ask for a fee, or increase the price. To verify the requestor's identity, the bad actor will ask for a scan or image of the student's Cal-1 Card be sent to them.
Tips if Something Seems Off:
-
The renegotiation of price with a stranger will seem suspicious. Also the request for an ID document should raise warning signs.
-
A Cal-1 card contains personal private information including name, picture, and a Student ID number (SID). These scams may be part of a more organized fraud to collect these images for impersonation. Also, the scam often leads to the financial loss of any money sent online for the tickets.
Follow up with the sender separately
If the deal seems too good to be true, or you are asked to provide personal information, end the conversation and if necessary, block the scammers number.
Report and/or flag it
You can report the fraud to the scammers mobile provider:
T-Mobile
AT&T
Xfinity Mobile
Verizon Wireless
Boost Mobile
