Key Student Responsibilities

Below are key Student responsibilities under the Roles and Responsibilities Policy. These reflect the realities of today’s world and recognize that we need to change the way we do things to protect the university community. Bears protect Bears!



All students


Student employees, graduate student instructors, and anyone else being paid by the university

  • Know the classification of your data and systems (Note: Student records are classified as P3)
  • Encrypt anything that stores sensitive information
  • Non-public or critical information/systems may need additional protection. Work with your supervisor or IT to develop a plan.
  • Complete all required cybersecurity training

Students in a Researcher role

  • Follow your supervising instructor, lab, or PI’s security protocols to protect the confidentiality of research subjects and research data.

Managers/supervisors of other people’s work or research

(“Workforce Manager” role)

  • Ensure that everyone you manage/supervise understands their information security responsibilities and receives proper security training
  • Review access rights annually
  • Incorporate information security into processes for hiring, separation, and change of employment
