DHCP Device Registration

You must register your device's MAC address (i.e., Ethernet MAC address) to use the campus DHCP service.

What does the DHCP Service do?

The DHCP Service automatically provides and assigns IP addresses, gateway, and other network configuration information to registered devices. As a benefit, you will receive any security notices involving your devices when connected to the campus wired networks.

Users accessing socreg.berkeley.edu from an off-campus IP address, or while connected to CalVisitor, will need to use the campus VPN to connect.

Please note:

Types of device registration

The campus DHCP service allocates or leases IP Addresses for registered devices on the campus's wired networks. Leased IP addresses are allocated to devices on the campus network in one of two ways: Fixed assignment (DHCP Fixed) and Dynamic assignment (DHCP Dynamic).

DHCP Fixed: Devices with a fixed DHCP registration will get the same IP Address when connected to their primary subnet.

DHCP Dynamic: All devices (including DHCP fixed devices, on any other than their primary subnet), will obtain a leased IP address from a pool of IP addresses configured for the subnet. If the DHCP pool of IP addresses is exhausted then no IP Address will be leased and the user will not connect to the campus network. Users should contact the campus DNS Administrator (dns@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail)) to report if they are unable to get an IP address lease.

Other Information:

The Registered Device list also includes ARP/NDP information and, when available, Cable ID Information.

  • ARP/NDP IP address history associated with a MAC address.

  • Telecommunications Cable ID information associated with a MAC address, if available.

Register Your Personally-owned Device(s):

1.  Go to socreg.berkeley.edu and log in with your CalNet credentials.

2.  Click on "My Assets" in the left navigation menu.

3.  If you are adding a device, click the "New Device" button. If you need to edit an entry, click directly on the MAC address for the device. How to find your MAC Address.

4.  Enter the information needed and click "Submit". Please note: It can take up to 15 minutes after registration before the Campus DHCP service will pick up the new Device and provide it with a DHCP IP address.

Devices can have the following attributes:

MAC address (Required):

Ethernet address (e.g., 11:ab:22:cd:33:ef)

Device Name (Optional):

An identifier provided by the registrant (max length 63 characters)

Dynamic DNS Hostname (Optional):

For use with Dynamic IP address assignment only

Individuals must always use the ‘Contact Us’ link to request DHCP Fixed registration.  Please provide the MAC address of the registered Device you would like to be changed to Fixed DHCP and the requested IP address or Subnet, if known.

Register University-owned Device(s)

To register a device to a unit Security Contact (not an individual), click on the name of the Security Contact and then on the Devices tab. Use the New Device button to register a new device.

Devices can have the following attributes:

MAC address (Required):

Ethernet address (e.g., 11:ab:22:cd:33:ef)

Device Name (Optional):

An identifier provided by the registrant (max length 63 characters)

Dynamic DNS Hostname (Optional):

For use with Dynamic IP address assignment only

Additional attributes are available for Department or Group Security Contacts:

Assigned CalNet ID (Optional):

The CalNet ID of the person using this device.

Notes (Optional):

Text field for notes (max length 250 characters)

IP Address:

If present, the device is registered for Fixed IP address assignment with this IP address

Unit Security Contacts can self-service register devices for DHCP Fixed IP address assignment – where a device always gets the same IP on its primary subnet, but a Dynamic IP on any other subnet – provided that the Security Contact has a registered subnet, with available IP address space, and a registered subdomain. Otherwise, use the ‘Contact Us’ link to request DHCP Fixed registration.  Please provide the MAC address and the requested IP address or subnet, if known.  If the registration process returns an error that the subnet is full, please contact the campus DNS Administrator (dns@berkeley.edu) to report the issue.
